Celebrities and Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is common; a survey of Canadians between 2012 and 2015 found that 40% of Canadians have hearing loss.

However, it shouldn't stop you from living a full life. There are many celebrities who are outspoken about their hearing loss and advocate for themselves, and others, with hearing loss.

Whoopi Goldberg

Famous for her comedy and her starring role in Sister Act, Whoopi has a long-standing hearing loss which she attributes to years of listening to loud music. Whoopi has been vocal about using hearing aids and has teamed up with the Starkey Foundation to raise awareness about hearing loss.

Derrick Coleman

Seattle Seahawk’s offence player Coleman, uses hearing aids while playing football, and he also uses lip reading to enhance his communicating skills. It just goes to show that being active and wearing hearing aids can go hand in hand!

William Shatner

Shatner, aka Captain James T. Kirk, has suffered with tinnitus for many years. He has been open about the negative effect that living with tinnitus can have on mental health. To cope with his tinnitus, he uses a small device in his hear to mask the ringing and buzzing.

Jodie Foster

Actress, Jodie Foster has been pictured wearing her hearing aids on many occasions. She has previously stated that she suffers from both hearing loss and vertigo. Little is known about how she came to have hearing loss but it hasn’t stopped her. Throughout her long career (she started acting at the age of 2) she has won many awards including an Oscar!
